1. Check the tracks.

Garage doors are designed to glide along on metal tracks. Sometimes these tracks become loose from the wall and need tightening or adjusting. Verify that the track is fastened tightly to the wall. Loose door tracks could allow the door rollers to run off track and force the door to stop operating as designed. Confirm that the tracks have no dents, crimps or flat spots. If the tracks have dents or any other form of damage, pound them out with a hammer and solid piece of wood. Replace the tracks if the damage is extensive.

2. Check garage door alignment.

Occasionally, garage door tracks get out of alignment and need adjustment. Check the tracks to ensure they are properly aligned and on the same height on the walls. If you find the tracks misaligned, loosen the bolts that hold the mounting brackets. Do not completely remove them. Using a hammer or other objects, tap the tracks carefully into the right height or position and check to confirm it is in the right position. Tighten the bolts back to secure the garage door.

3. Clean the roller tracks.

Using regular or concentrated household cleaner, remove dirt and grimes from the roller tracks. Clean the rollers thoroughly and wipe them dry.

4. Check for other loose parts.

Check for more loose items including the hinges that hold the garage door sections together. Tighten as necessary. Service or replace any loose or damaged hinges.
